Ikebana | Flower Arrangement

No comments:

Ikebana is Japanese style flower arranging. When translated, Ikebana means “flower kept alive”. There are many styles of Ikebana, some of which that I am still unaware.

I wanted to take advantage of more cultural courses for my semester abroad and so far it’s been great!

Our class went to an Ikebana Exhibit in Akita. We got a chance to see a variety of styles. We also had the opportunity to create our own arrangements.

ç This was my favorite arrangement in the exhibit.

In class we practiced the techniques we learned from previous lectures.

Our most recent field trip took place at a tea house. We learned how to prepare ちゃばな (chabana; which means tea flower). This arrangement is simpler than other styles of ikebana. Usually one flower in a かき (kaki - vase) is acceptable.

We were given numbered tiles which set the order for the flower arranging
The numbered tile is to be positioned in front while kneeling 16 rows back on the tatami mat

A formal bow must be made before starting the arrangement and at the end
Several photos from the garden
